The water in the soil becomes rich with tannins and seeps into the ground water or drains into lakes and streams. These waters become brown in color and look like tea. The word tannin comes from the old German word tanna meaning oak. It refers to the use of wood tannins derived from oak trees that were used to convert animal hides into leather.

May 06,  · Some of those, like aspens, birches, willows, and maples, tend to leaf out earlier, though other diffuse-porous species, like basswoods, tupelos, sweet gums and beeches, tend to leaf out later. This delay may have nothing to do with tree function.

Oaks tend to leaf out between early and late spring, depending on the latitude and species. For example, across its substantial range in North America, eastern white oak typically grows new leaves between late March and late May. California black oaks in the Pacific Northwest usually leaf out in May.

“We were in the woods, and not a parent or a friend on earth knew where. At this moment, we were untraceable, this notion an odd pleasure. A patch of fallen leaves glowed in a pool of golden sun, and the dim forest air smelled sweet, of young lilac, invisible sage.” ― Aspen Matis, Your Blue Is Not My Blue: A Missing Person Memoir.

Mar 21,  · Blow them into the woods. I don't believe it is the "green" thing to do to bag them up for trash. If you are into gardening like I am and would like to make some new beds, look up Lasagne Gardening. You can use up some leaves that way too.
